He resigned after a poor performance in the Lok Sabha elections and Jitan Ram Manjhi was made CM, but he was removed due to some misunderstandings. After this, on 22 February 2015, Nitish Kumar took oath of CM and remained in his post till 19 November 2015. For the fifth time Nitish Kumar contested elections with RJD and won. After winning the election, on 20 November 2015, he was sworn in as Chief Minister for the fifth time.
