Former India cricketer Deep Dasgupta is eagerly waiting to see Virat Kohli partnering opener Devdutt Padikkal at the top when they take the field against Mumbai Indians in the opening match of IPL 2021 on Friday.

Virat Kohli had said last month that he will be moving himself up the batting order to open with Padikkal, who was a revelation for RCB in the IPL last season.

Kohli averages over 47 as an opener in the IPL, having amassed 2345 runs in 16 innings. 4 of his 5 centuries in the IPL came when he opened in the 2016 season.

"It's going to be a very interesting opening combination with Virat. I don't think I need to remind anyone of what he did in 2016 when he opened the whole season. It's going to be extremely interesting to see Devdutt and Virat opening together," Deep Dasgupta said on Sports Today.

Dasgupta also urged RCB to give all-rounder Dan Christian a chance straightaway this season as he would add the required balance in their middle-order.

"Dan Christian straightaway gets into that playing XI for RCB. If you look at their middle-order it looks a little thin but when you put Christian in there, suddenly it looks lot better.

"As far as their bowling is concerned, it will be extremely interesting on the Chennai pitch because generally we've seen that CSK prefers to play on these turners. But now that we've got 2 neutral teams, it will be interesting to see how it behaves.

"Because of that Dan Christian's bowling also becomes very important. He can do what someone like a Dwayne Bravo does for CSK. Christian bowls a lot of those cutters and slower deliveries so on a slowish track, I'm assuming it will be a slow pitch, his bowling will be that much more important.

"RCB have a decent bowling attack. They have someone like Shahbaz Ahmed from Bengal, a very good white-ball bowler. They have Chahal of course. They have a well-balanced bowling unit. I doubt whether both Siraj and Navdeep, but I doubt if both of them will play along with the spinners.

"I don't think their bowling unit is that bad, it might not be the best in the competition but it is fairly good," Dasgupta said.
