Justice UU Lalit will be the next Chief Justice of the country, CJI Ramna recommended from Center

Justice Uday Umesh Lalit will be the next Chief Justice of India. Supreme Court Chief Justice Justice NV Ramna has recommended the name of Justice UU Lalit for the next Chief Justice of the country. After receiving the official letter from the Ministry of Law and Justice, now Chief Justice Justice Ramna has recommended the name of his successor. On Wednesday, his office received this letter from the ministry on Wednesday.

Justice Ramna took over as the 48th Chief Justice of the country on 24 April 2021. He replaced his predecessor Justice SA Bowde. He is now retiring on August 26 after 16 months.

Justice Lalit will take oath as 49th CJI on 27 August. However, his term will be only 74 days. Justice Lalit as CJI will lead the collegium that will include Justice Chandrachud, Justice Kaul, Justice Nazir and Justice Indira Banerjee. Justice KM Joseph will enter the collegium with Justice Banerjee retiring on 23 September. Justice Lalit will retire as CJI on 8 November. After this, Justice Chandrachud will be appointed as the 50th Chief Justice.

Justice Ramna today sent his successor Justice UU Lalit's name for recommendation as the next CJI. Justice Lalit will be the 49th Chief Justice of the country. According to tradition, the Chief Justice who retired recommends the name of the new Chief Justice. CJI Raman is retiring on August 26 this month.

There was speculation in the media that a few days ago an official letter regarding the next CJI to the office of the Chief Justice from the office of Law Minister Kiran Rijiju Has been sent. Now an official of the office of the Chief Justice said that the letter was received on Wednesday on Wednesday. He requested the CJI to recommend his successor's name. In order to recommend Justice Lalit's name as the next CJI, the Law Ministry delayed writing a letter to CJI Raman. Traditionally, the Ministry writes a month before the retiring of the existing CJI, who sends recommendations to the Ministry 30 days before his retirement.

In the meeting of the Supreme Court Collegium on Wednesday, there was no agreement on the appointment of judges once again. It has now been decided that the new CJI will decide on the appointment of judges in the Supreme Court and in the High Court. According to sources, no decision was taken regarding future appointments in today's meeting.

CJI NV Ramna has registered his name in history. During his tenure, 9 judges were sworn in together in the Supreme Court. For the first time, three women judges were sworn in in the Supreme Court. With this, the country will get women CJI as Justice Biwi Nagratna for the first time. During the tenure of CJI Raman in various High Courts, about 250 judges were appointed.
