Justice UU Lalit may be the next CJI: Chief Justice Ramna recommended the Center; Several decisions made including illegal triple talaq

Justice UU Lalit can become the 49th CJI of the country. CJI NV Ramna has recommended her name to Law Minister Kiran Rijiju. CJI Ramna will retire on 26 August. Justice Lalit can take oath as CJI on 27 August. CJI Ramna handed over a copy of his letter to Personally Justice Lalit on Thursday morning.
Law Minister Kiran Rijiju wrote a letter to CJI NV Ramna on Wednesday night. In this, he appealed to him to name his successor. The tradition is that the current CJI recommends the name of his successor only when they are urged to do so from the Law Ministry.
Justice Lalit will become CJI for just 74 days. The most senior judge Justice Lalit will become CJI for just 74 days, as he will retire on 8 November. Justice Lalit enrolled as an advocate in June 1983. He practiced in the Bombay High Court till December 1985 and then transferred the practice in Delhi in January 1986.
He was nominated as Senior Advocate by the Supreme Court in April 2004. As part of the order of the Supreme Court, he was appointed a Special Public Prosecutor for CBI to hear in all 2G cases. Justice Lalit was also a member of the Supreme Court of India Legal Services Committee for two terms.
Justice Lalit will be the second CJI, who was promoted directly in the back of SC from the bars and illegal 'triple talaq' was illegal. Many have been part of many historical decisions including stay. If he is appointed the next CJI, he will be the other CJI who was promoted directly from the bar to the SC back. Before him, Justice S. M. Sikri was the first lawyer to directly promote the SC back in March 1964.
