The wait for cricket lovers to watch matches at the iconic Eden Gardens Stadium will end soon as it gets ready to host the second leg of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 games from the first second week of May.

Indian stadiums had missed out on hosting IPL matches last year due to the coronavirus pandemic but the action is all set to return to the country with a bang from April 9.

The Eden Gardens Stadium, home to the Kolkata Knight Riders, will be hosting 10 games in IPL 2021 starting with Match 38 between Royal Challengers Bangalore and 2016 champions Sunrisers Hyderabad from May 09.

The stadium can accommodate 68,000 fans but it remains to be seen whether the state government will allow fans inside the stadium or not. All the matches this season will start at 7.30 pm in Kolkata.

IPL 2021 will be played only across 6 venues in India in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. No team will get to enjoy home advantage as none of them will get to play on their home grounds. Each team will play at 4 out of the 6 venues during the league stage which includes 56 games.

Chennai, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Kolkata will host 10 games each, while Delhi and Ahmedabad will host eight each. Bio-secure bubbles have been created across the 6 venues to ensure safe and smooth conduct of the premier T20 tournament.

Elections in West Bengal is the reason why Kolkata will host the second-half of the IPL matches.

"The fixtures of the tournament have been mapped in a way that every team will travel only three times during the league stage, thus reducing commute and minimising risk," BCCI secretary Jay Shah said.
