IPL 2021: Royal Challengers Bangalore opener Devdutt Padikkal tested positive for Covid-19 on March 22 and has been in home quarantine since. The star batsman is expected to miss the first few games in the new season, starting April 9.

Royal Challengers Bangalore on Sunday said their star opener Devdutt Padikkal is yet to join the squad in Chennai after testing positive for Covid-19 on March 22. Padikkal has been in home quarantine in Bengaluru with the RCB medical team constantly monitoring his progress in the lead up to Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021.

Devdutt Padikkal will join the RCB squad in the bio-bubble in Chennai after undergoing the mandatory RT-PCR tests, according to the IPL protocols.

"Devdutt Padikkal tested positive for COVID-19 on 22nd March 2021. He has been in mandatory quarantine at his residence in Bengaluru since then. Devdutt will be fit to join the RCB bio-bubble once his RT-PCR tests are negative, as per IPL protocol," RCB said in a statement on Sunday.

"RCB Medical team is in touch with Devdutt ensuring his safety and well-being. He is feeling well and we can’t wait to have him join the squad for IPL 2021."

Padikkal is now expected to miss at least two games for RCB. On Saturday, Delhi Capitals' spinner Axar Patel also tested positive for the coronavirus. While the DC squad is based in Mumbai, the members of RCB team are in Chennai where the side is scheduled to play the tournament opener against Mumbai Indians on April 9.

Padikkal emerged as one of the biggest revelations of IPL 2020 as he was in fine form at the top of the order for RCB. Padikkal amassed 473 runs in his 15 IPL games at an average of 31.53.

Padikkal was in a rich vein of form in the recently concluded Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy where he scored a total of 218 runs at an average of 43.60 in six matches for Karnataka. Further, in Vijay Hazare Trophy, Padikkal piled up a mountain of 737 runs by scoring them at a towering average of 147.40 in seven matches.

IPL 2021 starts on April 9 with the Virat Kohli-led side locking horns with defending champions Mumbai Indians in Chennai, to mark the tournament opener.
