IPL 2021: Rishabh Pant wants to be the main man and the leader, says Delhi Capitals coach Ricky Ponting

Delhi Capitals coach Ricky Ponting is confident that new captain Rishabh Pant is going to take the team to greater heights in IPL 2021 as he thrives in extra responsibility.

Pant will be leading Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League this season after regular skipper Shreyas Iyer got ruled out of the tournament with a shoulder injury. This will be the first time Pant will be leading a team in the IPL and Ponting is really excited to see what the young wicketkeeper does in IPL 2021.

Pant has big shoes to fill in as Iyer had taken DC to their maiden IPL final last year. DC qualified for the playoffs in the last two seasons under Iyer which is why there will be a bit of pressure on Pant to do the same this year.

But Ponting believes Pant will thrive in the extra responsibility that he has been given by the team management.

"We've had a few chats over the last few days and we'll have more of them in the next few weeks. I think if we can get most of the talking done with Rishabh about his captaincy leading into the first game, then we don't have to worry about it as the tournament starts.

"So the last thing you want is to be overloading the captain with all sorts of information once the tournament in underway," Ponting told Delhi Capitals.

Ponting said he will be helping out Pant with his captaincy but also urged the senior players in the side to assist the 23-year-old throughout the tournament.

"It's a big part of my job, it's a big part of the other coaches' jobs but also the senior players, I think it's a big part and a big role for them as well to get behind him and help him where they need to, not only at training but also, you know once the game starts he is going to need a little support.

"But what I know about Rishabh, is that he understands the game really well, he is very strong in his own thoughts and opinions. I think that will hold him in great stead as far as captaincy is concerned.

"And the other reason we made him captain is, I think extra responsibility is going to sit really well with him. I think he is that sort of person that like the responsibility. He wants to be the main main, wants to be the leader. So I'm really excited to see how he is going to go with it," Ponting said.

Pant's Delhi Capitals will be opening their IPL 2021 campaign against MS Dhoni's Chennai Super Kings at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on April 10.
