Veteran India spinner Piyush Chawla was picked up by defending champions Mumbai Indians for Rs 2.40 crore in IPL 2021 Auction and skipper Rohit Sharma said that the bowler brings in the variety that the team was looking for.

Mumbai Indians brought in veteran spinner Piyush Chawla into their squad after they picked him up for Rs 2.40 crore in the IPL 2021 Auction.

The decision surprised many as they already had talented spinner such as Rahul Chahar, Jayant Yadav and Krunal Pandya in their squad. But skipper Rohit Sharma said that Chawla was picked by the franchise for his IPL experience and his ability to pick up wickets. He also added that the team has certain expectations from the spinner and that Chawla will deliver whenever given the opportunity.

“He’s (Piyush Chawla) quite experienced in terms of playing IPL games and has been around for a number of years now. And he knows exactly what this team expects him to do. And I am pretty sure that he is going to be able to live by that.

“Because of his experience and the number of wickets he has taken in the IPL. He brings us that variety in our squad which we were looking for,” Rohit Sharma said in a video posted by Mumbai Indians on Twitter.

Piyush Chawla has taken 156 wickets in 164 matches in the IPL so far and has an economy rate of 7.87. He has played for franchises like Kolkata Knight Riders and Chennai Super Kings.

Rohit Sharma also said that he has played with Chawla since his U-19 days and the two share a good camaraderie.

“I have played with him since our U-19 days, so I know him pretty well and he knows me well, and this will be a good camaraderie between both of us on the field,” Rohit said.

Guys are excited about the season ahead, says Rohit

Speaking just ahead of the opener against Virat Kohli-led Royal Challengers Bangalore, Rohit Sharma also said that his team hopes to pick up from where the left off last season.

“The feeling in the camp is absolutely electric and upbeat. It is the start of a new season and we all know that. The guys are very excited to get going and we have got some new faces in the squad as well, which is exciting.

“The IPL is always an exciting time. And coming off from playing a lot of cricket as well, so yes looking forward to get going. I think it is going to be a good one this year as well. Hopefully, we can do the right things, we can continue from where we left in Dubai,” Rohit added.
