Former India wicketkeeper-batsman Deep Dasgupta said he believes Glenn Maxwell might find the much-anticipated Indian Premier League success in the upcoming season at Royal Challengers Bangalore.
Speaking to Sports Today in the lead up to IPL 2021, Deep Dasgupta said he finds similarities between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Glenn Maxwell's playing style and added that Virat Kohli's side might end up to be the perfect fit for the big-hitting Australian all-rounder.
Glenn Maxwell has struggled to emulate his international exploits in the IPL over the years. Maxwell had a poor IPL 2020 season wherein he managed just 108 runs in 13 matches at an average of less than 16. Maxwell struggled to fit into the bating order of Punjab Kings as he managed to end the season without even hitting a six.
However, Maxwell showcased fine form during India's limited-overs series in Australia and he followed it up with a string of good performances in the Big Bash League. Maxwell scored 379 runs in 13 matches, hitting at a strike rate of over 140. He was also handy with the ball for Melbourne Stars in the BBL.
Helping raise quite a few eyebrows, Maxwell was sold for Rs 14.25 crore as RCB snapped up the all-rounder after fending off a challenge from Chennai Super Kings in an intense bidding war.
"One of the biggest additions, for me, I would be really, really interested to see Glenn Maxwell at RCB. Does this franchise suit him? He has been around in the IPL but will this franchise suit him?" Dasgupta told Sports Today.
"I just have a feeling that this franchise might suit his personality and the way he plays his cricket. There is a lot of similarity in terms of the franchise, which is RCB and Glenn Maxwell. So I think this could be a year where Glenn Maxwell can prove he is as good a player in the IPL as he is any other tournament in the world," he added.
Meanwhile, RCB Director of Cricket Mike Hesson had said that the team management will be looking to provide a conducive environment for a match-winner like Maxwell to go out and express himself. The former New Zealand coach also stressed that Maxwell will be forming a two-prong attack with AB de Villiers in the middle-order.
RCB will begin their IPL 2021 campaign against Mumbai Indians in the season opener on Friday, April 9. The former finalists will look to build on what was an improved showing last year wherein they managed to reach the play-offs.
