Royal Challengers Bangalore AB de Villiers was pleased as punch after scripting his team's 2-wicket win over Mumbai Indians in the opening match of IPL 2021 in Chennai on Friday.
de Villiers's quickfire 48 off 27 balls helped RCB chase down 160 off the last ball against the defending champions at the MA Chidambaram stadium stadium.
"Was an incredible game of cricket. We knew it wasn't going to be easy, we knew it wasn't an easy pitch to play on and it's one of those wickets that gets harder as the game goes on and we knew if we could take it to the end we could take a chance," de Villiers said after the match.
The retired South African legend also spoke about playing with RCB debutant Glenn Maxwell, who contributed with 39 crucial runs in the chase.
"Absolute pleasure playing alongside him (Maxwell). I love playing with players like that and he just wants to win cricket games. And also there's Dan Christian," de Villiers said.
The result was a shot in the arm for the defending champions Mumbai Indians, who haven't won their opening match in the IPL since 2012. The win helped RCB improve their head-to-head record over MI with 11 wins out of 28 matches. This is also the first time RCB won their opening game of the IPL.
RCB will next face 2016 champions Sunrisers Hyderabad at the same venue in Chennai on April 14 while MI will take on two-time winners Kolkata Knight Riders a day before at Chepauk.
