Industry Body Isma has urged the Ministry of Food to increase the minimum selling price (MSP) from Rs 31-37 per kg from Rs 31-37 per kg. Isma has made this demand citing an increase in production costs. Aditya Jhunjhunwala, president of the Indian Sugar Mill Association (ISMA), has written in a letter to the Food Secretary that the MSP of sugar is important to pay the appropriate and beneficial price (FRP) set by the Center. FRP is the minimum price that mills have to pay for sugarcane farmers to buy sugarcane.

Isma said that at present, the All India X-mill prices of sugar are around Rs 33-34 per kg, While ex-mill prices in major Chinese producing states like Maharashtra and Karnataka are less than Rs 32-22 per kg. Jhunjhunwala said, "… The current X-mill prices are much lower than the production cost of about Rs 36-37 per kg on the current FRP. We request that the MSP of sugar can be increased to about Rs 36-37 per kg by connecting the MSP of sugar with sugarcane FRP. '

Isma said that about 85 percent revenue of sugar It comes from sale and hence it is important for mills to be able to pay FRPs to sugarcane farmers. The association said that the Center has been deciding the MSP of sugar from June 2018, which was revised to Rs 31 per kg in February 2019, when the sugarcane FRP was Rs 275 per quintal. Since then, the FRP of sugarcane has been increased by a total of Rs 15 per kg twice, but the MSP has not been increased. FRP for the year 2021-22 is Rs 290 per quintal.
